Last week at Connections, the annual digital marketing conference hosted by Salesforce ExactTarget Marketing Cloud, frontman for pop supergroup The Black Eyed Peas and seven-time Grammy Award winner will.i.am talked about his latest creative project.
During a fireside chat at the conference with salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff, he outlined his plan to introduce a new kind of “wrist computer” that will enter a market in which Apple just laid down the gauntlet for the tech industry with its new Watch.
The musician turned tech entrepreneur said that prior to the Sept. 9 Apple Watch announcement he was concerned that his dream of a creating a revolutionary wearable could be shattered. But he was relieved to find out that the Apple Watch, unlike his wearable device, has to be tethered to an iPhone. "There's a lane here for me," he said. "Tomorrow looks awesome." Will.i.am was also a co-founder of Beats Electronics, the creators of Beats by Dre headphones, which Apple acquired in May this year for $3 billion.
During a performance at the Connections conference, will.i.am gave a sneak peek of his wearable in action, using it to DJ a set and control the music. Previously he stated that the device will support Bluetooth headphones and apps such as Twitter and Facebook. He also told Benioff that garments, such as jackets, loaded with batteries could keep wearable devices charged for five days. “How come giant companies aren’t thinking from that perspective?” he asked.
Will.i.am plans to unveil his wearable at the Salesforce Dreamforce conference in San Francisco, during his keynote Wrist Power: The Vision of Wearable Computing and Fashion Tech with Will.i.am on Wednesday, October 15, from 5-6pm in Moscone South. (If you're not attending in person, will.i.am's keynote will also be webcast live at salesforce.com/live)
In conversation with Benioff, will.i.am also offered a glimpse into his background, growing up in East Los Angeles, and traveling two hours by bus daily to attend well regarded schools. He described his appreciation of the philanthropic support he benefited from during his childhood and his wish to pay it forward as a successful businessman, activist and philanthropist today.
Among will.i.am's multiple projects are ECOCYCLE, his partnership with Coca-Cola to encourage brands to incorporate recycled materials in their products, and the i.am.angel Foundation, which provides home mortgage assistance, college scholarships, financial literacy and help with college preparation for underserved students.
