This year at Connections 2014 we announced Journey Builder for Apps, our revolutionary new product that provides everything you need to connect your apps, products, and spaces to customer journeys. We were able to show off this exciting new technology in the conference's mobile app in order to run a gamification program where attendees could earn badges based on engagement online and at the event.

Specifically, we used three products of the Salesforce Marketing Cloud: Contact Builder, Automation Studio and Journey Builder.

Here is how we built the experience:

The first step was to create data extensions to store all of the Connections 2014 attendee registration information as well as information for each of our badges.

Using Contact Builder we defined the relationships between our data extensions and a contact record by creating an attribute group. This process established the contact model that would be used to enter people into our custom interactions.

Next, automations were created using Automation Studio to periodically run our badge criteria queries and to fire events that would trigger a user to enter our Interactions created in Journey Builder. These automations ran throughout the conference in order to capture badge achievements as they occurred.

Finally, we created Interactions within Journey Builder to define the experience that a user would receive when he or she was awarded a badge. This included a congratulatory push notification, which was delivered using Journey Builder for Apps, and in some cases an email.

The end result was a way for our Connections 2014 attendees to digitally receive badges based on their completed achievements during the conference. We were able to build cohesive journeys for attendees and engage them in personalized, 1:1 ways. This was our way to power of Journey Builder for Apps and the opportunity that exists for you to connect apps, products, and spaces to your customer journeys.
