There it is. A glowing tile on the surface of your phone or tablet. The almighty app. Each app opens its own world and allows us to share, communicate, build, create, and even work in ways that were unthinkable just a few years ago.
But according to some studies, while there are an average of 65 apps on a typical smart phone, only 15 are used daily. And some studies suggest that the typical app is never opened more than once after download.
So for every great mobile app people use every day, there are dozens of apps, if not hundreds, that fall by the wayside.
But how do you create an intuitive and powerful app that’s amazing from the moment that it’s opened? Where do you even begin?
A lot of people start with the UI, the front-end experience.
Unfortunately, this is like putting the cart before the horse (to use a luddite analogy).
At Salesforce, we believe that the best place to begin is by understanding all the components that will need to be available on the mobile device to make the app as useful as possible. Only then can you begin to create a top layer UI that truly delivers by working seamlessly and effortlessly with back end data and processes.
To make this a little simpler, one approach is to break out the decisions that should be considered in building a mobile app into layers:
Next week, we’ll go into greater detail about those first four back-end layers that are the foundation every great app (mobile or not).
Before doing that, we’ll leave you with a few starter questions that can help you build a framework for the app you want to build:
What app do you use everyday? And why?
Do you love it for the information it brings you? Or the way it brings it to you?
Just answering these questions with simple observations about an app you love will do more than you realize to get you on the right road to build a more engaging and amazing business app.
