A few years ago, I was sitting in my office one chilly December morning (it was maybe 60 degrees outside – the California version of cold), and particularly feeling the holiday spirit. I loved walking into the office every morning with a gingerbread latte in hand and spending the afternoons listening to Michael Bublé on my Pandora holiday radio station, and the moments when I left the office only to be greeted with an array of festive lights and decorations. I thought, “If only there was a way to keep the spirit of the holiday season strong throughout the entire month in the office.”
And thus, planning holiday events at the office, also known as: “The Magical Month of MyCorporation,” was born.
This is the time of year where our office does a little celebratory activity each day of December in order to keep our spirits and productivity high. We’re now in our second year of making the magical month a tradition and it’s something everyone collectively looks forward to each year. It also makes it a lot easier to come into work in the colder months when there’s something fun waiting for you through those office doors.
Want to make a month of magic for your workplace too? Here's how to get started.
So you don’t take everyone by surprise on days that they need to come prepared with something (like cookies for a cookie swap), make sure to send out a calendar of all your planned activities. On the calendar, include your office’s off days. In the office, aim to have an activity every single day of December. If that's too much, do a special celebration every Friday, or scatter a few days throughout the month.
Whether you’re celebrating every day in December or just a couple days throughout, you don’t need to spend a fortune. Our biggest expense is usually on the Christmas tree for the office, but that’s an area that everyone can chip in and help decorate. A lot of our festivities involve our employees bringing in things from home, like decorations for their desks, a dish for a potluck lunch, or a small gift for our white elephant exchange. None of this should cost much money and you can usually include a price maximum.
Keep the celebration going by including everyone: you can either have relatively non-specific “winter celebration” throughout December, or celebrate each holiday. No one should feel left out during the holiday season, and it’s a great learning experience for your employees to participate in other forms of holiday celebrations.
Have a happy, spirit-filled December, everyone!
