A goat. A bear. A badger. An owl. Any idea where we’re going with this?
You guessed it – Trailhead! In the tech world, Salesforce Trailhead is unlike anything else out there ... and that’s the point. It’s unique, it’s unforgettable, and it’s enjoyable. With a loveable cast of characters, iconic and inspirational branding, and writing that will make you laugh out loud, Trailhead truly is the fun way to learn Salesforce. Our community agrees – over 1 million badges have been earned so far!
But what goes on behind the scenes? Who are the gifted gurus behind this major initiative? Well, as it turns out, the talented team behind Trailhead is awesome, and they’re having just as much fun as you’d think.
We sat down with Domenique Sillett Buxton, Senior Creative Director of Trailhead and our February Woman of the Month, to learn more about her adventures and advice on making the magic happen. Take a look.
What has your journey been like at Salesforce?
I started in 2012 as a contractor on the Developer Marketing team, then moved over to Trailhead. I have worked on this initiative since its inception, mentoring designers and working with extraordinary illustrators and writers.
Today, I collaborate with wonderful people across the globe to inspire members of our Ohana to blaze their trails with Salesforce. I help tell our bigger Trailhead story across multiple programs, and apply that story to websites, events, and a whole lotta swag. It’s the best job I’ve ever had!
How did Trailhead first come to be?
When Trailhead first debuted, it was a big change from our previous ideas and programs, and it challenged everything I was as a designer. It was only a slide at the Dreamforce Developer Keynote in 2014, but when Adam Seligman zipped up one of the first Trailblazer hoodies at the 2015 MVP Summit and the call for 10,000 Badgers was answered in a few short months, we knew this was big. After that, I have made it my mission to help others understand the Trailhead personality and get to know the characters we’ve created, and to empower them to have as much fun with the brand as we do!
How do you see the Trailhead brand? Who are the main characters?
Trailhead really is the fun way to learn Salesforce, and our characters reflect that! Astro is your guide, who, like Trailblazers, believes that anyone can be whatever they want to be. Curious and always learning, Astro is always up for an adventure on the trail. Codey the bear is Astro’s BFF, a rascal who likes to build things and loves to give bear hugs. Cloudy is a goat that’s always at the center of the action. Like the cloud, she’s always there for you. No event is complete without getting a #goatselfie with Cloudy! Hootie McOwlface stands for knowledge, and Earnie Badger was made for our community of passionate badge-earners. And Einstein is the genius who gets smarter with every interaction – just like Salesforce Einstein.
What do you wish every member of the Ohana knew about Trailhead?
That the Salesforce team absolutely loves working hard to make Trailhead for you!
What is your favorite Trailhead character and why?
Astro will always have a special place in my heart because our Ohana loves Astro. Astro brings people together.
What work are you most proud of in your career?
Creating work that brings people together and helps them to achieve success. And having the idea to create a mascot that has come to represent the fun side of Salesforce. I’m Astro’s mom!
What are you passionate about?
Being creative. I really enjoy brainstorming, and working with others to come up with new ways to surprise and delight our Ohana. To stay creative and fulfilled in my work, I surround myself with people I admire and care about - they help me unwind and unplug. I’m also always on the lookout for ideas - the best ones usually come from places you wouldn’t expect!
Best advice for those looking to amp up their creativity?
Be full of delight and the ideas will follow. Brainstorm early and often.
Best advice for achieving career success?
Have a mentor. Be nice to others. Stay inspired and do what you love. Share your work with your peers, and collaborate early and often – you’ll find the work to be much richer and enjoyable overall. And roll up your sleeves to help, no matter what your job description.
The Salesforce Woman of the Month campaign turns the spotlight on the amazing women who help make Salesforce one of the World’s Most Innovative Companies according to Forbes and one of Fortune Magazine’s Best Companies to Work For. Honorees are nominated by fellow employees and selected by a dedicated committee that works to ensure a variety of roles and regions are honored.
