On September 9, 2014, Tim Cook launched the iPhone 6 and introduced the Apple Watch. I remember watching the trailer narrated by Jony Ive. The video unveiled an intimate, personalized approach to technology.

My watch will tell me more than the time.

My watch will let me take action.

My watch will let me connect. (I will be able to share my heartbeat. #love)

I emailed the trailer to my family. I shared a screenshot of my favorite style with my boss. She congratulated me on being timely, if not discreet.  I was sold.

On October 10, 2014, Marc Benioff introduced Wave Analytics at Dreamforce. Two years in the making, Wave Analytics was built for any data, any app, and every business user.  It was also designed mobile-first, available on the devices that we use most: the phone and tablet.  

However, the preview of the Apple Watch introduced a new platform for mobile: a wearable with a universe of apps, creating a new, democratic, accessible interaction model.

On March 9, 2015, Tim Cook officially launched the Apple Watch. The Apple Watch extends the capability of wearables, coming to market with an app ecosystem.

And with the launch of the Apple Watch, came the launch of its first enterprise app: Wave Analytics for Apple Watch.

Introducing Wave Analytics for the Apple Watch

When our product team began designing for the Apple Watch, developers and UX designers went back to the drawing board.

  • A watch screen is smaller than a phone screen.

  • Navigation needs to take place with one hand.

  • Interaction time should be less than 10 seconds.

Knowing all this, the primary use case would not be ongoing exploration or dashboard design — capabilities that Wave Analytics brought to the phone.

Rather, Wave Analytics for Apple Watch would be purpose-driven in its design: to quickly surface information, to empower the user at the right time:

  • Sales reps can review customer pipeline while walking into a meeting.

  • Field service reps can swipe to get a view of product performance and switch to their phone to update a case.

  • A marketer can review a campaign performance dashboard to be prepared at a moment’s notice.
