“Hey dude, I like your ‘stash.” No, it’s not what you think — that’s code for appreciating a man’s fine looking and well-groomed mustache.

That’s right, it’s Movember!  This organization raises awareness and funds for mens’ health issues, specifically prostate and testicular cancer.

For those that are unfamiliar, during November, men grow a mustache and participate in various competitions, parties, and online community activities in the name of raising money for charities devoted to men’s physical health, mental health, and cancer research. It’s a fun community event for a great cause. Some sales people create Movember office teams, others go at it solo. You can register or pick a person/team to donate to on the Movember foundation’s website.

Each November when I’m delivering training, I look around the room and notice lots of “Mo Bros.” What type of guy grows a mustache for a cause? I got to thinking about the qualities and traits that Movember participants have, and how these qualities are shared by Sales Superheroes:

1. They stand behind their beliefs

Making a visible, public commitment to raise awareness for mens’ health is really putting your money where your mouth is!

2. They are involved team players

Mo Bros are not only making and sharing a common social statement, at the end of November they throw a giant shaving party.

3. They are culturally connected

This international movement is all over the world — from Ireland, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Spain, the United Kingdom, Israel, South Africa, Taiwan, and to the US — and has already raised $174 million worldwide.

4. They create strategic partnerships

A few years ago, Movember partnered with TOMS to create limited edition Movember shoes for participants.

5. They believe in the F-U-N factor

In 2011, the world’s largest sandcastle "Mo" was built on Bondi Beach, in Sydney, New South Wales, featuring an enormous mustache.

6. They are in-demand and respected

Men with mustaches are perceived to be more attractive, industrious, creative, masculine, dominant, and mature by both men and women.

7. They get hired

Men with facial hair were rated higher by their employers on aspects of masculinity, maturity, physical attractiveness, dominance, self-confidence, nonconformity, courage, industriousness, enthusiasm, intelligence, sincerity, and general competency.

So what do you think? Are you participating in Movember? Share your favorite parts of the organization with me in the comments!
