Companies across industries are using custom applications to innovate and connect. Much of this development is moving to cloud platforms using Platform as a Service. PaaS allows enterprises to quickly build and scale apps to literally millions of customers and employees, without worrying about the cost of infrastructure or the complexity of managing software.
One example of this kind of development is what salesforce.com’s IT department has done, and continues to do, on the Salesforce1 Platform. The 100% cloud technology powers IT as they work to build and release apps that meet the needs of the business. And every one of these applications can be made mobile inside the Salesforce1 Mobile App with clicks and not code.
During a recent webinar, salesforce.com CTO of IT and VP of IT Architecture Brett Colbert shared four of the newest employee facing apps developed at the company on the Salesforce1 Platform:
The “Org Chart” app gives every person at salesforce.com greater visibility into who’s who among the more than 13,000 employees and contractors. Colbert says that because the core components that exist on the Salesforce1 Platform have common APIs, it freed up much of IT’s development time to focus on the user interface for the app.
In addition to giving employees a daily schedule that integrates mobile device contacts, calendar, and even local weather, salesforce.com’s “Today” application allows meeting attendees to dial directly into events from the Salesforce1 Mobile App. There is no toggling around on their phones. Plus, according to Colbert, the development speed of the Salesforce1 Platform meant this app took less than twelve weeks to build.
This app serves as an aggregated one-stop-shop for all approval requests. With “Approval Central,” managers can avoid going back to their desktops and searching through various programs to sign-off on various items. Just a few clicks within the app and they’re done.
The “IOU” app is the most recent release from Salesforce IT. It works like a basic to-do list, but every item is associated with a co-worker. The app is designed to help salesforce.com employees manage the things they agree to do for someone else at work and the tasks that another individual agrees to do for them.
