The right corporate intranet can dramatically improve employee engagement and productivity. The wrong one does the opposite. Legacy solutions can be difficult for users to access and navigate. In addition, they are often challenging for an IT department to maintain. If your company is facing issues like this, it may be the prefect time for a redesign.

It is possible to build an intranet that provides relevant info to employees, enables collaboration, streamlines documentation, and does not demand IT’s time and attention.

Here are four ways to do just that:

1. Make it user friendly and searchable

Avoid putting a bunch of links up for the sake of it. Keep the intranet homepage design simple, highlighting only the most important info, and then provide a solid search function so users can easily find what they are looking for.

2. Listen to employee feedback

Take the time to gather feedback from employees through things like informal polling and organized surveys. There may be something from the old intranet that they want brought over and you can include it in the redesign. In addition, they are great sources for ideas on new features.

3. Drive collaboration around content

A main goal of your updated intranet should be to give everyone in the company reasons to come to a single location to collaborate. Adding a social element, like a Chatter feed, is one way to do this. You may also want to create an editable section on the homepage where important posts and corporate news can be highlighted.

4. Don’t reinvent the wheel

Look around your company. If one department already excels at creating content or engaging with customers on social media, for example, consider incorporating that into the intranet redesign. There is no need to recreate something that already exists.
