You’ve likely heard the term “PaaS” or Platform as a Service, particularly if you are exploring the idea of building custom applications to grow your businesses. But what exactly is PaaS?

At its core, PaaS provides all the infrastructure needed to develop and run applications over the Internet. In addition, PaaS eliminates the expense and complexity of managing all the hardware and software that used to be needed for such applications. Just as Amazon.com, eBay, Google, iTunes, and YouTube made it possible to access new capabilities and markets through a Web browser, PaaS offers a faster, more cost-effective model for application development and delivery.

Building and running on-premise applications was previously complex, expensive, and slow. Each application required hardware, an operating system, a database, middleware, Web servers, and other software. A team of experts was needed to keep everything up and running. Inevitably, a business requirement would mean a change for the app, which would then kick off another lengthy development, test, and redeployment cycle. Applications built with this outdated infrastructure are difficult to update and scale for growth, and are also a headache to make mobile and social.

The arrival of “cloud computing” has shifted the way enterprise applications are built. A new app can be created and delivered almost as easily as opening your Internet browser (not quite, but compared to past methods, it seems that simple!). By leveraging PaaS, organizations can redirect a significant portion of their budgets from “keeping the lights on” to creating applications that provide real business value, and benefit employees, customers, and partners. Users can access custom apps built in the cloud, just like their Software as a Service (SaaS) apps, while IT departments can focus on innovation instead of complex infrastructure.

Salesforce.com is a leader and innovator in PaaS.
In fact, over four million apps have been built on Salesforce Platform. Watch the below video to check out a demo of how it works.
