“One of the single largest challenges in growing your business, is learning how to hire the right people at the right time,” says Edward Hess, Professor of Business Administration and Batten Executive-in-Residence at the Darden Graduate School of Business, The University of Virginia, and author of Grow to Greatness, Smart Growth for Entrepreneurial Business.
Most entrepreneurs hire too quickly, because they get themselves into situations where there’s an urgent need to hire. They’re under pressure and when they meet a candidate, if that person feels right, they hire them right away.
“Best practice is to hire slowly, and to fire quickly, as soon as you realize you made a mistake,” says Hess.
But entrepreneurs don’t like having difficult conversations, so they will put off firing someone until it may be too late. And the person has already cost them time and money.
“In my entire study of 54 high-growth companies, no entrepreneur said they fired too fast. They all did the opposite,” Hess says. “They hired fast and fired slowly, and it should be the reverse.”
