At Salesforce Heroku, we believe that great apps happen when empowered developers and IT teams work together. Our goal is to remove the complexity around building cloud-native apps.

Today, we’re excited to share three key product announcements that advance Heroku’s focus on developer experience, trust and compliance, and the ability to build multi-cloud apps.

Developer experience enhancements

Docker support

Over the last few years, Docker has emerged as the de facto standard for packaging a new generation of apps for deployment. Building Docker images on Heroku is now in beta, helping teams to use Heroku’s workflow and continuous delivery features with containerized apps, including:

  • Using “git push heroku master” to build and deploy Docker images

  • Taking advantage of Review Apps when using Docker for higher-quality releases

Heroku CI: Parallel Test Runs and API availability

To build software with speed and quality, continuous integration (CI) is a popular and best practice and is an essential part of a continuous delivery (CD) practice. Since we introduced Heroku CI over a year ago, we've developed features aimed at faster testing and optimized workflows. Heroku CI Parallel Test Runs and the Heroku CI API are now in GA. Parallel Test Runs allows developers to split test runs across up to 16 nodes to reduce execution time substantially. With the Heroku CI API, developers can create, trigger, and receive test run info from a custom workflow or other CD tools. We are also running a private beta program to support cross-browser UAT via integration with third-party providers. Check here to learn how to participate.

Powerful new primitives for multi-cloud apps

Secure VPN for hybrid and multi-cloud apps

VPN is a powerful, proven, and widely-adopted technology for securely combining multiple networks (or adding individual hosts to a network) over encrypted links that span the public Internet. VPN support for Heroku Private Spaces enables Heroku customers to establish secure, site-to-site IPsec connections between Private Spaces on Heroku and their offices, data centers, and deployments on non-AWS clouds. VPN and VPC peering are examples of new features that make Heroku easier for system admins and network engineers to integrate into existing infrastructure. Go here for more details: https://blog.heroku.com/private-spaces-vpn

Internal Routing to simplify security and compliance

Internal Routing is a powerful new network control feature for apps running in Heroku Private Spaces. Internal Routing enables developer teams to deploy Heroku apps in a Private Space that can only be accessed by other apps in the same space, simplifying microservices architectures. Apps with internal routing cannot be accessed directly from the public internet, improving security and simplifying management and compliance checks. Internal Routing also opens up use-cases for Intranet-like apps that are only accessible to certain users. Internal Routing lets customers use Heroku’s high-productivity development, deployment, and collaboration features for very sensitive apps and workloads that require strict network-level access restrictions.

Trust and compliance

Compliance is an essential component of our shared trust journey; a powerful new set of Heroku capabilities now help developers bypass mundane tasks, remove friction, and automate processes. We have recently added certifications for ISO 27001/27017/27018 and SOC2 Type I Attestation. These compliances expand the existing Heroku compliance program, which already covers highly regulated data types such as PCI-DSS data (“credit card data”) and HIPAA data (“protected health information”).

Dreamforce ‘18

For those attending Dreamforce, we look forward to seeing you there and sharing more about these recent updates to the Heroku platform. Remember to visit the Campground to see AlignTech and Dubsmash — two great Heroku customers — in action and stop by the Developer Forest to meet Herokai in person and ask questions. And remember to attend the Developer Keynote on Thursday, September 28 at 1 p.m. or watch it online. There are also dozens of Heroku sessions available in the Agenda Builder now. And if you just can’t wait — or unfortunately can’t make it to Dreamforce this year — you can get a sneak peek of new Heroku features in action by watching our Developer Preview live broadcast on Friday, September 14 at 9:30 a.m. PDT. Register for it here.
