Our Salesforce LIVE team teamed up with the Economist for a compelling five-part series on the future of work — and the people who are doing tomorrow’s jobs today. Between transforming old jobs to creating entirely new jobs altogether, these individuals are at the forefront of a new frontier. And who better to engage these forward-thinkers than Peter Schwartz, SVP Strategic Planning at Salesforce and our own company futurist?

In this installment in the series, Schwartz sits down with CEO and Co-Founder of Planet Labs, Will Marshall. When you think of satellites, you might still picture massive structures sitting on top of your roof, or floating around in space. But that’s not the case in 2016.

Planet Labs develops miniaturized satellites that collects the most frequent, broad Earth imagery data — ready for immediate use.

“The dominant cost in space is typically launch cost, in terms of dollars per kilogram, to put something up there. If you could put more capability per kilogram going up, you could of course do much more,” said Marshall.
