HELLO, WORLD.

After months of hard work, I am excited to share our first product. Coolan is a new community-based analytics solution that provides customers with visibility into the performance of their infrastructure. The service delivers insights paired with information aggregated from the data center environments of a community of operators. Using that historical data, we leverage machine learning techniques to predict failures, prevent outages, and benchmark against industry peers.

Coolan helps reduce downtime and can significantly lower the cost of infrastructure — a key concern in the data center. With our powerful data analysis, we present solutions to optimize hardware and inform future purchasing decisions. Empowered by the community, we uncover issues that arise during the lifecycle of a server and bring transparency to the enterprise hardware space.

HOW IT WORKS

We’ve worked with small startups and webscale companies, and universally, we’ve heard from DevOps engineers, data center managers, and CIOs that they want more insight into how their hardware is performing — they want hard data on real-world problems that go beyond the buzz and marketing claims. Why is my server failing? How often does it fail and can I prevent the next failure from occurring? How can I optimize the configuration of my server? What does my current inventory of hardware even look like? Did I purchase the right equipment for my needs?

To answer these questions, we built a software platform that engineers, infrastructure managers, and IT teams can easily access via a dashboard and API. Customers deploy a small piece of code we have developed onto their server fleet, and this software continuously collects metadata on how the servers are performing. It digs deep and analyzes thousands of operational variables, from how many hours a component has been in operation to how many bit errors have been generated by memory, and our platform evaluates the server for stability and efficiency.

From there, we took it a step further. We’ve seen firsthand the benefits when a community works together to solve a common problem – open sharing and collaboration have been at the heart of some technology’s greatest advances – and we’re bringing that crowdsourcing wisdom to the operational systems used to manage data centers. Coolan’s algorithms analyze the collective configuration, failure, and event data from our customer base, so that we can empower each customer – whether they have ten servers or hundreds of thousands – with insights gleaned from a much larger data set.

The benchmarking reports and personalized, real-time recommendations we provide around configuration, debugging, and optimization are grounded in this historical data. With Coolan, customers can shift from what is typically reactive administration and monitoring of their data center environments. Instead, they’ll be able to proactively reduce downtime by anticipating hardware issues and improving server reliability, leading to more efficient infrastructure. With the typical annual failure rate of a server at 7 percent, even an incremental improvement can translate to a cost savings of thousands to millions of dollars, depending on a customer’s server fleet.

WHO WE ARE

This launch is a culmination of many months of hard work, and we’re proud of what the team has accomplished in a short period of time. My brother and co-founder Yoni and I are joined by Jonathan Heiliger, former vice president of infrastructure & technical operations at Facebook, who serves as a co-founder and advisor to Coolan. We bring to this effort our experiences from building next-generation hardware at Facebook and Google, and from sharing those designs via the Open Compute Project, a community-based initiative that seeks to build more efficient and sustainable infrastructure technology.

Coolan completed a seed round of funding in February 2014, led by Social + Capital, North Bridge Venture Partners, and Keshif Ventures.

WHAT’S NEXT

Coolan is currently in private beta. We are working with companies of all sizes and in different industry verticals. If you’re interested in learning more, contact us.
