National Small Business Week 2014 is here and entrepreneurs all over the U.S. will be celebrating in style. Since 1963, when President John F. Kennedy first declared National Small Business Week into existence, it has taken off with various forms of festivities from small business owners everywhere.
If you haven’t marked the occasion in your office yet, or if this is your first ever National Small Business Week, here are some ideas to fuel your celebration:
What better way to celebrate than giving back to your customers? Every single one counts and without them, you wouldn’t have a small business to run in the first place. Holding a week-long promotion or buy-one-get-one-free offer is a great way to increase your brand’s exposure and gain some new customers. Offer the discount on one of your most popular products as a means to introduce them to what you have to offer. Make sure you have plenty of customer care representatives available via phone or your social media pages to answer any questions that come up.
If you’re lucky enough to be in San Francisco, Kansas City, Boston, or Washington D.C. this week, sign up or have your name added to a waitlist to attend in-person events for National Small Business Week. You can also register for online events.
Just like with your customers, it would be pretty hard to run a business all on your own, so use this week to give back to your team. You can buy a little something special for them every day, such as gift cards, wrap up the week with a half-day of work on Friday, or offer a catered lunch. Regardless of what you choose, making the effort is a nice gesture that lets your team know they are appreciated and noticed for all of their hard work.
The mantra of NBC's Parks and Recreation character Tom Haverford has long been to, “Treat yo’ self!” when you’ve been working hard. This week is all about the hard work that entrepreneurs, small business owners, and CEOs like you have put into growing this economy. As President Obama said during 2013’s National Small Business Week, “America’s small businesses reflect the best of who we are as a nation, daring and innovative, courageous and hopeful, always working hard and looking ahead for the next great idea." Great effort deserves great recognition and you deserve something nice for yourself. Take a tip from Tom: a day of pampering may be just the ticket.
