It’s easy to get caught up in your own world when heading into the office in the mornings - whether that world includes scrolling through emails on your iPhone, balancing a coffee cup and briefcase, or listening to music on your earbuds – and breeze right on pass your team’s offices and desks without any greeting.

However, skipping out on saying good morning to your staff, even just for a few mornings out the week, does more harm than you think it might in the workplace.

Keeping the flow of communication going is twofold and requires both the sender and receiver to interact with one another. The longer you work together and the closer everyone grows to one another, you’ll wind up being much less formal and more conversational and jokey together. Not quite on that road yet? Here are my four biggest tips on how to start breaking the ice and getting to know the people you work with!

1. Make the rounds and say good morning

The great thing about saying, “good morning” to everyone individually is that the salutation leads easily into additional discussion on everything from the weather to weekend activities. Say it with a smile and give the brief conversation your undivided attention – you never know just how much it may turn a bad morning into a great day.

2. Keep an open door policy

For the CEO or manager who constantly keeps their door shut, it’s much more difficult to encourage team members to stop by because they may feel as though they’re interrupting something. As much as you can, keep the door to your office open and let your team know they can stop by for a visit anytime.

3. Hold weekly department meetings and monthly team meetings

Make it a habit to meet up with each department once a week to review what they’re working on and lay out the game plan for next steps to come. These meetings are a little more intimate and allows you to mingle in jokes and conversation about family, friends, and current events along with work discussion. For the monthly team meetings, provide updates along with fun team building activities so everyone to participate.

4. Celebrate everything

From a strong sales month to baby showers to birthday and every holiday in the book, celebrate everything in the workplace with treats and fun activities. A more engaged team is a happier team and a happier team yields a great customer experience and more revenue. And you don’t even need a reason to celebrate – bringing in donuts on a Tuesday says thanks for being there and working hard.
