Helping veterans find new job opportunities in the technology industry

In 2015, around 5,500 veterans left the Australian military to carve out a civilian life. For these transitioning veterans, it can be a daunting and challenging time as they try to find a new sense of purpose and a fulfilling career external to the military.

Giving our veterans training and employment opportunities are critical steps in helping them make the transition from a military life to a civilian one. This is why I’m hugely honoured to announce the launch of VetForce Australia. In partnership with the veteran support organisation, Soldier On, our aim is to help Australian veterans find fulfilling careers in the technology and cloud industry.

Vetforce addresses the technology skills shortage

VetForce is a global Salesforce program dedicated to making the transition from soldier to civilian smoother. It focuses on delivering structured self-paced learning journeys that include free Salesforce and business skills training, in-person Salesforce training cohorts, community collaboration, Salesforce certification, and employment connections to customers and partners in the Salesforce ecosystem.

At a time when Australia has a skills shortage across the fast growing technology sector, we should be looking to our veterans who already have a great foundation of high-demand interpersonal and technical skills, like teamwork, communication, critical-thinking and problem solving. It is our hope that VetForce Australia will help bridge this skills gap.

Opening doors with Salesforce certification

We’re committed to providing 100 Australian veterans with the opportunity to become Salesforce certified over the next 24 months. The training will be offered across a number of role types, equipping veterans for careers as Salesforce system admins, business analysts, technical specialists and various other roles. The four week VetForce training and certification program is followed by ongoing mentorship to support veterans gain employment.

We leverage Trailhead for Salesforce training, and Salesforce partners and customers provide coaches and employment opportunities in the Salesforce ecosystem. We also actively engage one of our greatest assets - the Admin, Developer, and Salesforce MVP communities, to ensure veterans are supported throughout their learning journey.

Join the force

I’d also like to thank IBM, our first major partner to offer its support in Australia with a commitment to hire veterans globally via the Salesforce VetForce program.

Helping veterans transition to civilian life is not just a way to keep faith with the men and women who have served our country. It is also an investment in the strength, spirit and security of our society. I hope VetForce, in partnership with SoldierOn, will help in some way to supporting those who have served and sacrificed so much on our behalf.

VetForce is actively seeking additional technology companies in Australia to support the program through employment pledges, veteran coaching and mentoring as well as business and soft-skills training.
