As we approach the federal election on July 2, I am proud that Salesforce Australia is part of a growing coalition of corporate sponsors that supports Australian Marriage Equality.

Equality is a core value at Salesforce and we passionately believe in equal rights for all, including our 20,000 employees and the millions of users of our products and services. We strongly support laws and policies that protect and promote equal rights and we oppose policies and laws that could create a discriminatory environment.

Salesforce has long supported diversity and inclusion. As part of our commitment, we have taken strong steps to protect members of the LGBTI community from laws that may allow discrimination against them. We have also made our voice heard on the issue of marriage equality. In 2013, we joined an amicus brief filed in the U.S. Supreme Court, along with many other major U.S. companies, challenging the constitutionality of California Proposition 8, which banned same-sex marriage. We also joined an amicus brief filed in the U.S. Supreme Court challenging the constitutionality of the Federal Defense of Marriage Act (“DOMA”). We joined these amicus briefs to oppose legislation that allowed for discrimination against our LGBTI employees and customers.

With our Federal election upon us, Australia is poised to take up the issue of marriage equality again. Globally, nineteen countries have passed laws to allow same sex marriage, including countries that are culturally similar to ours like New Zealand and Great Britain. On May 22nd 2015, the Republic of Ireland held a referendum to sanction same sex marriage. Ireland voted yes and approved the changing of the Constitution to extend civil marriage rights to same-sex couples. In June 2015 the US Supreme Court ruled that same-sex marriage is a legal right across the United States. It’s time for Australia to extend this legal right to all of our citizens, too.

Salesforce’s support of equal rights issues, including marriage equality, is consistent with our values of equality, diversity and respect which are crucial to the success of our business. We want each of our employees to feel valued, respected and have equal opportunities. And we are not the only business to see this clearly; we stand with hundreds of Australian companies that also support equality for all.

As we head into an election with marriage equality as a core policy differentiator, I am proud to say that Salesforce Australia will continue to support laws and policies that promote and protect equal rights, including marriage equality, for all of our employees and customers around the world.
